Looking back, each of those experiences played an essential role in helping me discover my passion for and commitment to this important work: assisting, guiding and accompanying individuals and families at this most vulnerable stage of life.
For as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to supporting people and communities. Early in my career, I served as a speech-language pathologist, helping people and their families navigate life changing brain injuries in hospital and community settings. While raising my own family, I discovered a passion for digital storytelling, founding a small business focusing on sharing family stories through video documentaries and photo montages. After learning how future generations will be impacted by the ravages of climate change, I made
another shift and dedicated my work to education and advocacy around environmental issues. This led me towards a greater understanding of the structural inequities that exist in our society and a personal commitment to social, racial and disability justice.
A long-ago hospice volunteer, my interest in exploring issues around death and dying resurfaced as I supported a dear friend through her own end-of-life journey. This work is dedicated to that beautiful friend, Caren, who inspired me to pursue this path by declaring, "I wish I had a death doula."
May her memory forever be a blessing.
